Neighborhood Clay Totem Project, 2020

These four ceramic stacks are the collective work of about 35 neighbors and friends. During the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, these artists took clay home, made and decorated hollow forms, and returned them to me for firing. I then colored the pieces with oxides and fired them again. Some of the clay we used came from a hillside in the neighborhood. Even though we worked alone, some with no prior experience, we created art that brought us together in spirit. The totems continue to catch the attention of people walking by our house. They’ve launched many conversations with strangers, and several valued friendships.

The project was written up in our neighborhood newsletter, which you can read here.
